durable goods

We tend to regard durable goods as eternally durable.  It is absurd to think that something physical is forever, but we always err.  Once we begin to use something, we take it for granted that we can be with it always.   It is better suited to the present age to think so rather than taking everything as disposable.  However, we are likely to hang on to things for too long.  We can be a good customer while we cannot be a good consumer to boost economy.

While I was cooking pasta for lunch, the tongs fell apart.  It was purely because of metal fatigue as I used the pair often.
